Working Within a National Legacy

Smokey Bear is one of the most recognizable public service icons in the United States, stewarded by the United States Forest Service.

Underdogs was brought in to support the development of a structured brand guide to expand licensing potential while protecting the integrity of the character.

This work required precision. Federal properties operate within strict usage parameters.

Expanding the Visual Language

The engagement focused on developing scalable design assets that could live within approved licensing environments.

This included:

  • Custom pattern development

  • Supporting iconography systems

  • Structured visual applications aligned with federal guidelines

The goal was not reinvention. It was extension.

The assets needed to feel modern and usable for licensing partners without compromising Smokey Bear’s legacy or message.

Designing for Licensing

Licensing programs require clarity and consistency.

We worked within established brand standards while creating adaptable elements that could support:

  • Apparel collaborations

  • Merchandise extensions

  • Promotional partnerships

  • Future brand activations

Every design decision considered long-term licensing utility.

Balancing Heritage and Modern Use

Smokey Bear carries decades of public trust and recognition.

The brand guide development was designed to honor that history while preparing the visual system for contemporary collaboration opportunities.

This project demonstrates Underdogs’ ability to operate inside highly regulated brand environments — where creativity must align with governance.
